Mahseer at Gan Island 1963.
This photograph was taken immediately after the end of a severe tropical storm when we were anchored in the lagoon of Gan Island in the Maldives. Gan was a staging post for RAF aircraft flying to and from the UK to the Far East. To the left of the image you can see the outline of a Vulcan bomber that was forced to make three attempts to land due to the bad weather. The jet engine noise of the aircraft when the landing was aborted was the loudest that I had ever heard and was only exceeded years later when I attended a British Grand Prix at Silverstone and later still the Nottinghill carnival! Regrettably this image was badly affected by mould and my attempts to remove it only resulted in the loss of the emulsion in the area of the sky at the top of the slide. However it records a scene, an event and an RAF Base that cannot be photographed today.
