Manaar Loading at Colombo
Taken in 1966, this image shows the SS Manaar loading from barges in Colombo Harbour. My camera at the time was a Voigtlander 35 mm slide film unit with a standard 50 mm lens. It was therefore impossible to capture the whole vessel from the harbour launch I was on (returning to the ship after shore leave) so I was obliged to limit the image to the superstructure from the end of the accommodation deck on the Starboard side. The accommodation ladder against the Hull was the only way to board or disembark the ship. Manaar was built in Glasgow in 1950, was UK registered and had a gross tonnage of 8996 Tons. She stayed in service with Thos and Jno Brocklebank Ltd until 1971 when she was sent for scrapping in Taiwan. For so many reasons she still occupies a very special place in my affections since I last saw her in 1966, a period of 52 years (as of 2018).
