Ship's Bell of HMS Iron Duke.
I have visited Winchester Cathedral a number of times in the recent past as I am fascinated by its history , age and beauty. For the first time ever during a recent visit in June 2022 I noticed the ship's Bell of HMS Iron Duke that was presented to the Cathedral by Sir Frederick Charles Dreyer who had been Iron Dukes Captain during the WW1 Battle of Jutland in 1916. There is much information on the Internet about HMS Iron Duke's naval service in World Wars 1 and 2.
The inscription on the panel to the left of the Bell reads
"The Ship's Bell of H.M.S Iron Duke
Flagship of Admiral Sir John Jellicoe at the Battle of Jutland 31st May 1916.
This Bell was presented to the Cathedral by Admiral Sir Frederick Dreyer who was Captain of the Iron Duke at the Battle."
HMS Iron Duke was scrapped in Glasgow in 1948 so I imagine her Bell is one of only a small number of artefacts that remain .
