When I selected this image of the Vehicle Carrier Autoroute for upload to the Web site I was struck by how Vehicle Carrier size and designs have changed over the intervening years since she was built in 1979. Autoroute is described as a RO-Ro/passenger ship, had a Gross Tonnage of 7114 Tons and was capable of transporting between 670 to 695 cars. In comparison a recent Vehicle Carrier visitor to Southampton (2020) was the 20000 Ton Hoegh Target that is capable of transporting 8500 vehicles over 14 decks. This image of Autoroute shows her motoring in the Solent in bound for the Port of Southampton. Internet sources reveal that Autoroute was scrapped in 2009. This image was captured in February 2007 from the deck of a Red Funnel car and passenger ferry.
