Port of Aden from the Harbour looking towards Steamer Point.
This image is extremely poor but refreshes my memory of times long gone . Aden in 1963 when I first visited on Thos and Jno Brocklebank's SS Mahseer, was a duty free port and a welcome stop over on the way to Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and India. It provided wonderful opportunities to buy low cost consumer items (watches, cameras and radios) that were not available in the UK at that time and if they were certainly not at the same cost. Pounds Sterling were accepted in all shops. In 1966 on the SS Manaar the local political situation had deteriorated to the point where crew were not allowed ashore for their own safety and the Port Authorities provided armed guards on the ship's gangways to deter attacks.
