Many years ago I participated in a yachting weekend to train to obtain the Royal Yachting Association's (RYA) Competent Crew Certificate. Part of the training was to identify different types of navigation buoys that might be encountered when sailing in British Waters including the Cardinal Buoys, one of which is featured in this image. I am ashamed to admit that over the intervening years I have forgotten what the different types are, their warnings being identified by the orientation of the triangular markers located at the top of the Buoy. Prior to posting this image of the North East Shingles buoy, I had to look it up and learnt that it's position just off HurstCastle in the Western Solent Southampton is to advise mariners to keep East of its position and away from the shallows to the West. The image was captured from the deck of the SS Shieldhall in August 2021.
