Rail Coach?
I must put my hand up and admit from the outset that I have absolutely no idea as to the purpose of the equipment shown in this image which I captured when it was parked on the Quayside in Southampton's Western docks in July 2022. There were other units on trailers that were painted with the same graphics which from their shape suggested they were the front and rear sections of a train. This led me to conclude (probably incorrectly) that together they form some sort of railway track geometry measuring system. Two names painted on the trailer suggests to me that the equipment is Italian in origin. The first Grimaldi Group were possibly the shippers, using one of their vehicle carriers to transport the equipment to the UK whilst the second name, Morello are manufacturers of moving equipment including heavy duty trailers. For me the purpose of the equipment will probably forever remain a mystery. Such items only illustrate what a diverse range of products and goods move through our ports on a daily basis through the course of each year.
