The 2023 Round the Island (Isle of Wight) Race was held on the 1st of July 2023 and I had the very good fortune of being on board the preserved Steam Ship SS Shieldhall to witness part of that day's racing. The weather in the Eastern Solent and the English Channel was cloudy with occasional sunny periods but with strong gusting winds. According to the sailing expert on-board Shieldhall who provided an extremely interesting commentary on the race, such conditions would favour the larger racing yachts but provide challenging sailing conditions for the smaller boats. I believe that there were over 1100 entries for the race. Due to the strong winds slowing the smaller yachts and the limited time that Shieldhall had off Bembridge, the number of competing boats that I was able to photograph was down on the numbers photographed in 2021. I saw two multi-hull yachts that had been capsized in the English Channel close to the Bembridge Shelf Cardinal Buoy which must have been an absolutely devastating outcome for their owners and the crews of both yachts.
