Astrid.
An exciting aspect of ships photography for me is that when I capture an image of a vessel for the first time I rarely know anything about its history until I undertake an Internet search, often years after the image was captured. This is most definitively true regarding the sailing ship Astrid featured in this image, captured late afternoon on a day in December 2009. The image shows her sailing in the confined waters of the harbour in the Port of Funchal on the Island of Madeira. There is a wealth of information on the Internet about her history from when she was built in the Netherlands in 1919 and rigged as a lugger to the time in 2013 when she sank off the coast of Ireland (fortunately without Casualties) and sadly subsequently scrapped as beyond economic repair.
